what is Color Depth... stands for.  

Answer
Color depth is exactly that...the amount of colors that can be contained in the image.

If you had an image with strictly black or white, there would be 2 colors...if you have a monochrome or greyscale image, there will be 256 colors, or you can have a "custom" palette of colors...computer monitors can display millions of colors, while most TV's can only display thousands of distinguishable colors.
