Question
Why don't the Naruto charecters use the transformation jutsu more often, it seems it  would be really usefull?

Answer
The transformation jutsu seems to be purely an illusion ability.  Not really useful for combat (which is most of what Naruto is) and is more suited for spying and infiltration. There are probably many uses of this jutsu in the manga and anime that we don't see because the person doesn't get caught using it.

Either that or the author forgot that his characters can use such an ability and that is why the characters haven't used it.
