Question
I live in Rhode Island and I have two hanging baskets of petunias. They were doing beautifully since I purchased them in June.  Now they are getting holes in the flowers and I am getting some dry short branches with a dry "pod" at the end.  What is causing this and what can I do to correct it?

Elaine, the plants are definitely being infested by an insect. The most probable include flea beetles, whiteflies, or aphids.

Regardless of the insect, the control is the same. The safest and most economical control is insecticidal soap. You can purchase this at most garden centers, or make your own by adding one tsp. of lemon non-concentrated liquid dish soap to one gallon of water. The soapy extract destroys the digestive systems of the insects.   

Two other organic alternatives are pyrethrum and rotenone. Both are made from plant extracts and are very effective against insects. You can purchase these at your local garden center or through organic companies such as Gardens Alive or Planet Natural. I have attached both links for your convenience.
