Question
Hi - I live in Western Washington State, about 35 miles South of Seattle. I have planted zuchinni's for the third time and each time I get different results. This year I have had some fine zuchinnis but, now as the year goes on, I am starting to have my fruit starting to turn yellow as they grow. This seems to be starting when they get some 3-4 inches long. I have been watering them for 10 minutes every night, is this too much ?? They are like the "girl with the curl" when she is good, she is very, very good but, when she is bad, she is horrid". Any thoughts?? Thanks. Phil

Answer
Phil, rather than watering every night for 10 minutes, I would recommend twice per week for 30 minutes. As with most vegetable plants, zucchini requires a minimum of 1" of water per week. More may be required during hot, dry periods.

Frequent watering in short spurts causes the roots to reach for the surface, rather than deep down. This stresses the plant, making it difficult for them to absorb nutrients and oxygen. I would also mulch the plants heavily with straw or dried grass clippings. This will help cool the soil and retain moisture during the interim periods between watering.

So in summary, water less often and more deeply.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
