Question
I have some large Bogenvia plants growing along my block wall around my
house here in San Diego. It has been growing without any maintenance for about
10 years (I just bought the home). It is all over the place, intertwined, and
doesn't really produce many flowers. I would like to know how far can I safely
cut it back, and where would I find information that shows me how to do that?

Gary, as is the case with most plants, I never recommend pruning more than 1/3 of the plant each season. More than that can cause the plant to go into shock.

Pruning is essential to promote blooming, and should be done after blossom drop in the fall or late winter. This could be why your plant has not bloomed well the past few years.

There are many books available in the library or at your local book store on pruning. They usually cover many different plants, including bogenvia. You can also do a search on the net by typing in bogenvia +pruning. Just be sure to wait until all danger of severe freezing weather has passed so that you do not injure the plant. Mid-March is usually an ideal time. And be sure to use sharp pruners.
