Annuals/Geraniums

QuestionI just recently planted red geraniums - some of them are wilting a bit and turning purple. What is causing this?
AnswerMost problems related to wilting and discolorization are due to poor soil conditions. Usually, the soil is lacking in nutrients and often is composed of too much clay, which causes root rot; or sand, which causes the plant to dry out prematurely.
The best advice I can give you is to amend the soil with organic materials, including peat moss, aged manure, and compost. This will balance the ph of the soil, increase the nutrient level, and improve the tilth of the soil.
Also, be sure to water very deeply and only when needed. Shallow watering causes the roots to reach for the top of the soil instead of straight down. The result is weak, spindly plants.
Finally, mulch around the plants with shredded bark to maintain a consistent soil temperature and to help retain moisture.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
