Question
I live in Denver Colorado I planted two lilics about 5 year ago and this year was the frist year I got some blooms they were small and not very many can you tell what I need to do to make next year a better one for my lilics

Answer
Delia,
Lilacs are one of those plants that are not "instant coffee" - it takes a few years for a bush to produce a good show.  In the meantime, you can apply an organic fertilizer either fall or spring, and make sure that your soil is a neutral  pH or slightly above.  I think that Colorado has alkaline soil, but check with your local cooperative extension or a garden center and ask them to be sure.  If you have acidic soil, add wood ashes or lime every fall.

In a couple of years you will have dozens of fragrant lilacs!

Expertise

Annuals suggested for specific situations (sun, shade, windowboxes etc) New or unusual annuals are a particular interest of mine, and I grow many of these from seed. I am happy to help problem solve, answer questions about maintenance, and guide you to sources of unusual plants.

Experience

I am a garden writer/speaker/consultant and host of a weekly gardening radio program in the Northeast. I have been gardening all my life for my own pleasure, and started as a professional gardener and garden communicator 15 years ago. I work part-time at a garden center, selling and tending shrubs/trees/annuals/perennials...and doing some propagation and design work. I often think that all these professional activities serve to put a somewhat legitimate framework around a serious case of plant-lust.
