Question
Could you please tell me the best type of fertilizer or any other tips to get large heads on sunflowers, I am not bothered about the height, I want the growth in the head. When is the best time to plant them for maximum growth by September. I live in the North East of England. Thanks.

Answer
Valerie, for large sunflower heads, you need to use a fertilizer high in phosphorus. This is the second number on the ratio on the front of the bag. Phosphorus promotes abundant blooms and large flowers.

Sunflower seeds are best sowed directly into the garden. They cannot be transplanted unless started in peat pots. If they are removed from a container and then planted, they will suffer from transplant shock. Peat pots allow you to transfer the entire growing medium without disturbing the roots. The other advantage to using peat pots is that you can start them indoors for earlier blooming.

I plant my sunflower seeds directly into the garden in mid-May. This generally ensures me that I will have flowers by mid-August to early September.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if you ever need assistance.

Regards,

Mike
