Annuals/annuals

Question
We have just planted over 100 Celosia, Marigolds and Salvia all around our front and back yard.  We are expected colder than normal temperatures tonight(we have heard anywhere from 29-39 F).  Should we TRY to cover all the flowers?  We live in North Central Florida.

Answer
Kim,
If these were my plants, I would try and cover them...either with light weight sheets or floating row cover if you have it on hand.  If you can't cover them all, cover the ones that were harder to plant then others (sometimes salvia plants are small and hard to get out of six-packs, for example...so I'd cover those.)

After gardening for 35+ years I also know that prayer never hurts....

I'm sending WARM thoughts and prayers your way,
C.L.

Expertise

Annuals suggested for specific situations (sun, shade, windowboxes etc) New or unusual annuals are a particular interest of mine, and I grow many of these from seed. I am happy to help problem solve, answer questions about maintenance, and guide you to sources of unusual plants.

Experience

I am a garden writer/speaker/consultant and host of a weekly gardening radio program in the Northeast. I have been gardening all my life for my own pleasure, and started as a professional gardener and garden communicator 15 years ago. I work part-time at a garden center, selling and tending shrubs/trees/annuals/perennials...and doing some propagation and design work. I often think that all these professional activities serve to put a somewhat legitimate framework around a serious case of plant-lust.
