Annuals/bouganvillea. etc. in window box

Question
Situation:  3 SE exposed window boxes that each have bouganvillea, bacopa and
Gerber daisies planted in them.  The boxes are filled with Miracle Grow potting
soil.  The blooms appear to be slowing down but the green foliage is robust.  I
haven't fertilized because the MG soil has it in it, the exposure is mid day full
sun with bright light the rest of the day.  I water when dry.  Suggestions to
improve blooms, please.  I live inn No. VA.

Answer
Christine,
Unfortunately, Bouganvillea do not bloom all summer, so no amount of fertilizing or water will help - it has a bloom period after a cold period, but once that's done the plant does not contine to bloom.  You might want to pull it out of the boxes, plant it in pots elsewhere, and replace other blooming annuals in the boxes.

all the best,
C.L.

Annuals suggested for specific situations (sun, shade, windowboxes etc) New or unusual annuals are a particular interest of mine, and I grow many of these from seed. I am happy to help problem solve, answer questions about maintenance, and guide you to sources of unusual plants.

Experience

I am a garden writer/speaker/consultant and host of a weekly gardening radio program in the Northeast. I have been gardening all my life for my own pleasure, and started as a professional gardener and garden communicator 15 years ago. I work part-time at a garden center, selling and tending shrubs/trees/annuals/perennials...and doing some propagation and design work. I often think that all these professional activities serve to put a somewhat legitimate framework around a serious case of plant-lust.
