Annuals/ornamental sweet potato

Question
North Missouri
Last week I fixed some big pots with osteospermum, dusty miller and margarita sweet potato plants.  We had cold temps one night, about 38, and the sweet potatoes had several brown spots on the leaves.  It didn't kill the plants, but they didn't like it.  Should I cut off the brown leaves and hope they will grow out of it or should I just pull them up and start over with new ones?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Rosalie,
Although osterospermum like cool temps, as you discovered the Sweet potato vines do not.  If they are still alive, just leave them alone for the time being.  If the leaves are very damaged they will drop off on their own - or you can remove them in a few weeks once the plant starts to grow.

The osteospermum will stop blooming when it gets hot, so be prepared to replace them once the temperatures rise.  Many of them say that they bloom all summer, but it isn't true.
all the best,

Annuals suggested for specific situations (sun, shade, windowboxes etc) New or unusual annuals are a particular interest of mine, and I grow many of these from seed. I am happy to help problem solve, answer questions about maintenance, and guide you to sources of unusual plants.

Experience

I am a garden writer/speaker/consultant and host of a weekly gardening radio program in the Northeast. I have been gardening all my life for my own pleasure, and started as a professional gardener and garden communicator 15 years ago. I work part-time at a garden center, selling and tending shrubs/trees/annuals/perennials...and doing some propagation and design work. I often think that all these professional activities serve to put a somewhat legitimate framework around a serious case of plant-lust.
