Question
Ive been in recovery since september. Im up to a healthy weight now and in a good range for fat percentage, but still no signs of a period. Im probably the biggest ive ever been and i just want my period back. My doctor said that as soon as i hit the correct weight it will start, but i have read in many places it could take up to a year? I eat about 2000 calories a day and exercise for abwt 20mins a day, any ideas. Im 5.8 and 59kgs

Answer
Hi Jemma,
That must be frustrating. It sounds like you are working so hard to get yourself healthy and it must be disappointing your period has not returned despite that.
I am not a doctor, but as you know your period usually start once your weight normalizes. However, when exactly to expect its return differs person to person. For me, my period returned almost instantly once I was at a healthier weight. But when I was in treatment, it was not unusual for other woman to still go without getting their period after maintaining a healthier weight for a few months. Think of it this way: Your body was put through a lot of stress for an extended period of time and it can take just as long as you were sick to get yourself well again. I think with time your period will return as normal, you just have to be patient. How long has your weight been healthy enough for a period? If several months go by and menstruation still has not returned, definitely talk to your doctor. Worse case scenario, there are ways to induce your period by taking certain medications. However, I have confidence your period will return in time. Try to be patient and keep on the look out! Good luck and let me know how things progress.

Expertise

I battled anorexia and bulimia for 6 years. I am not a doctor, but I learned a lot about the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of having an eating disorder and how scary it is to feel like you are alone in your illness. You are not alone. I can answer questions based on my experience with anything relating to anorexia and/or bulimia. I can provide information on treatment options, some specific treatment centers, resources that may help you find a treatment center, and my opinion on all of the above. I was a patient at a few outpatient and inpatient programs so I am happy to answer questions about those experiences. I am not affiliated with any of the resources I may provide. It’s strictly my opinion based on my experiences. I can NOT answer medical questions. I will NOT answer questions on how to become anorexic or bulimic or how to lose weight in an unhealthy matter.

Experience

I have recovered from a six year struggle with both anorexia and bulimia. I hope my experiences and the time I spent in and out of treatment will encourage others to never give up. I never thought I would or could recover because I couldn’t picture myself ever having a normal relationship with food. Since then, I have grown and learned that I can overcome what I once thought was impossible. Hold on to the idea that recovery is attainable!

Education/Credentials
I am attending college for an unrelated degree.
