Question
hi, i had a question about my period. i used to weight about 110 lbs and dropped down to 85 in about 8 months.  now ive been gaining for about 4 months and am 100 lbs ! but the problem is i still dont have my period.  i am at a healthy weight because im only 5'1 and have a small frame but i eat a lot of fat and about 2500 calories a day and still no period.  could my body need more weight to get my period ? ive heard that sometimes after anorexia your body makes you weigh more just to jump start your period. im just getting worried that it will never come back. thnaks !

Answer
Hi Alexis-
It might take awhile.  Your body has been in starvation mode for quite some time.  Everything needs time to re-calibrate.  Don't worry, it will come back.  If you have not been to the gynecologist in a while I would recommend doing so.  Congrats on your ongoing recovery.

Expertise

I can answer several different types of questions about eating disorders, and how to deal with them. I can help figure out how to determine whether an individual needs professional help; how to choose what type of treatment may be most effective (i.e. therapist, nutritionist, psychiatrist or combination). I can give information about what a person can do to avoid relapse which would include an explanation regarding how to identify and avoid triggers and give ideas about where to get help in person and online. I can also give advice to concerned family members or friends. Perhaps most importantly, I can help increase self-understanding and acceptance.
