Question
iam in 10th grade and i have had problems with eating to about two years.  i dont know or think that i have an eating disorder but iam not sure.  in 8th grade i didnt eat for a while then fainted while at school.. after that i stoped for awhile but then went on and off of fasting.... then towards middle of 9th grade i started making myself throw up all the time and lost about 10-15 pounds in a week and a half.  then i stoped and now iam using laxatives.  i take two every night before i go to bed.  i cant have an eating disorder because i still have a belly fat.  i was also wondering if i took laxatives and not eat at the same time what would happen?

Answer
Hi Dani-
I understand that you think you have to be really thin to have an ED, but that is not true.  It sounds to me as though you do have a problem, a pretty serious one, and that it would be a good idea for you to talk to someone.  ED's can really sneak up on you and then once you realize that you have a problem, it becomes really hard to get out of the self destructive cycle.  Please talk to someone you trust, hopefully an adult.  Ask them to help you get help.

About the laxatives plus fasting, basically you will dehydrate, probably faint and get really bad stomach cramps.  In other words, it is not a good idea.

Please consider getting help Dani, it will really help you out in the long run.  I wish you the best.

Expertise

I can answer several different types of questions about eating disorders, and how to deal with them. I can help figure out how to determine whether an individual needs professional help; how to choose what type of treatment may be most effective (i.e. therapist, nutritionist, psychiatrist or combination). I can give information about what a person can do to avoid relapse which would include an explanation regarding how to identify and avoid triggers and give ideas about where to get help in person and online. I can also give advice to concerned family members or friends. Perhaps most importantly, I can help increase self-understanding and acceptance.
