Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Trying to gain weight after an eating disorder
Expert: Nafeesah - 5/12/2009
QuestionI am 29 years old, 4'11, and weigh 81lbs. I have suffered with an eating disorder since I was about 14. I am now a wife and a mother and am tired of this lifestyle. The disorder was always so easy becuase I never have to try very hard to lose weight and my appetite has always been poor. When I was pregnant (my child is now two) I was only able to reach 106lbs and it only took a few months to drop to 77lbs. At my husband's insistance, I began the uphill battle to try and gain weight. Even while "trying" I would occasionally drop a pound and I am now stuck at 81lbs. Is it possible to short circuit your metabolism. I've been tested for thyroid (because my sister had a goiter before and well they usually check TSH in most blood work anyway) and it has been normal. I would really like to completely recover and am considering seeing a doctor but I am concerned I won't be able to eat enough. 1st question was about metabolism. Second question is: What kind of doctor should I see? Hope you can help!
AnswerI would consult with a doctor to get your weight up so it's monitored so you won't have any kind of complications. When you have an eating disorder like anorexia and bulimia you can throw your metabolism off. I would see your general physician and get a referral to a specialist if needed to handle your particular issue.
