Question My mother is 73 she has heart problems and had a stroke now she is suffering severe depression, she has lost her appetite for the past few weeks I am concerned that she is starving herself to death what can I do
Answer Ofelia
It is not uncommon for older people to have depression and have it be confused with dementia associated with age or the person being "snowed under" from their medication. Unfortunately this is very common in our health system and the occurrence of depression is often overlooked or under-appreciated.
It is very important to you to work with your doctor and bring up these questions. If they go ignored, seek help from a specialist in age related health (geriatric doctor). You are your mother's advocate during this time. The stroke could also effect her appetite, but you need to talk to her doctor or a specialist.
