About Melissa
Expertise
I battled anorexia and bulimia for 6 years. I am not a doctor, but I learned a lot about the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of having an eating disorder and how scary it is to feel like you are alone in your illness. You are not alone. I can answer questions based on my experience with anything relating to anorexia and/or bulimia. I can provide information on treatment options, some specific treatment centers, resources that may help you find a treatment center, and my opinion on all of the above. I was a patient at a few outpatient and inpatient programs so I am happy to answer questions about those experiences. I am not affiliated with any of the resources I may provide. It’s strictly my opinion based on my experiences. I can NOT answer medical questions. I will NOT answer questions on how to become anorexic or bulimic or how to lose weight in an unhealthy matter.

Experience
I have recovered from a six year struggle with both anorexia and bulimia. I hope my experiences and the time I spent in and out of treatment will encourage others to never give up. I never thought I would or could recover because I couldn’t picture myself ever having a normal relationship with food. Since then, I have grown and learned that I can overcome what I once thought was impossible. Hold on to the idea that recovery is attainable!

Education/Credentials
I am attending college for an unrelated degree.

Anorexia/Eating Disorders - tiredness

Question
I'm 24 years old and have recently gained weight over the past 2 years following being in an anorexic condition from about 17 to 22. I'm 6 ft and now weigh nearly 10 stone, however went down to a weight of 7st 4lbs.
I lost my periods for a number of years but now have gained them back during the past 2 years having been put on the contraceptive pill. I became very anaemic when I lost my weight and needed a blood transfusion and stayed in hospital for 3 weeks.I also developed kidney reflux whereby my bladder has become very sensitive. During the past year I have gained weight but still have bladder problems despite my recovery from anorexia. However my main concern is the incredible tiredness that I now experience on a daily basis, which is frankly recking my life. I have recently graduated from university but find it difficult to carry out my full time job due to this fatigue despite my enthusiasm for my occupation. I was wondering if this is a side effect of anorexia and will it ever go away? plus do post anorexics experience problems with their bladder and kidneys? your advice would be a great help as i just want to feel better and get back to living my life to the full.

Answer
Fatigue is very normal in both anorexia and bulimia. Fatigue is related to a weakened immune system. In addition, electrolyte imbalances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and malnutrition are all linked to fatigue. It will go away as your body regains the nutrients it needs. You may have some vitamin deficiencies that need to be addressed.
As far as your kidneys and bladder I can't really say. That's out of my expertise.
