Anorexia/Eating Disorders - Does my daughter have an eathing disorder?

Expert: Nafeesah - 7/6/2009

Question
Hi Nafeesah,

My daughter, who is 16 and a half, has always been a very picky eater. There are about 10 things she will eat and she has been this way since she was about 3 years old. She has always been thin and now is 5'7'' and weighs about 112. Recently, my husband and I have suspected that she is vomiting after she eats, but we are not sure, since she is a very private person. She gets her period, although not regularly, and her hair is still thick and shinny. She does have bouts of anger, but this has been her personality since she was little. She would deny ever having any eating disorders and has never been open to talking about any of her problems. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks very much.
Cathy

Answer
That's the hardest thing about being a teenager is talking about feelings, but have you considered family counseling to talk about things going on. It doesnt sound like she has an eating disorder, but it's causing her body chemistry to be thrown off which you should talk to the doctor about since having irregular periods isnt normal.
