Question
QUESTION: I know my body isn't healthy because I haven't reached my body weight that it needs to be at. I know this because I still haven't gotten my period. Since I am recovered from I guess an "eating disorder" (I lost about 28 pounds.. related to depression) I am eating completely normal and everything! I just wanted to know if it was possible that my metabolism is even FASTER now that I had to kind of...rebuild it. My weight doesn't seem to coming back......I don't know why!

ANSWER: Dear Maple,

I'm so glad that you wrote me!

Have you been to a doctor for a check up?  I think that should come first.  Next it would be great if you could see a nutritionist and have her check what you're eating.  You might not be getting enough calories to gain weight.  That would usually be the case or it could be that you're exercising too much??

Let's see if we can figure this out!

QUESTION: I am not sure. I only do yoga. I just thought once I started eating normally my body would go back naturally....

Answer
It's really time to bring in those professionals, Maple.  If you go to www.mirasol.net, you'll find a BMI calculator.  You can figure out what you'd need to weigh to have a BMI of 18 -- that's the weight when people usually get their periods back -- it's an average -- but a good guide.

Sometimes the body (stubborn they can be) just takes a while to get revved up again --  maybe some walking 3-4 days a week can help with your metabolism.  I do think that a visit with a good nutritionist or dietitian could help tremendously.

Let me know how you do!

Warmly,
Jeannie

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
