Anorexia/Eating Disorders - Healthy Weight Loss in Anorexia Recovery

Expert: Nafeesah - 9/10/2009

Question
Hi Nafeesah,
Just to start, I'll give you some background info about me. I am 21 and have been in recovery fron anorexia for about 7 months now. I am 5 feet tall and weigh 110 now, 75 is where I started. I was inpatient and in a partial program as well. My nutritionist is concerned about my weight, he wants me to be around 100 - 105 range, but my weight has just kept going up. I am at my breaking point again now. I eat a mealplan and excerise moderately but I am still terrified I'll keep gaining. I still have not gotten my period either. I am miserable in my body. What do you think is going on?

Answer
Your period has paused because your eating disorder has thrown your hormones off and this is something you need to talk with an endocrinologist about to find out what can be done to correct this problem. You will gain weight since you're 7 months into recovery and it usually takes about a year to get back to normal since your body is getting used to food since you spent a lot of time depriving your body of nutrients and food. I would see your doctor about the issues you're having with weight.
