Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Weight fluctuations

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I suffered with anorexia about  2 years ago and spent a year in hospital where i gained the weight needed and then have been doing pretty well in my recovery with bumps but am doing okay. Although recently both my weight and my water percent are increasing quite quickly and I am not eating any more or doing anything less and wondered if there was an explanation for this. I get a period occasionally, but its not that time of the month.

It is kind of scary as I don't want it to keep increasing but then i know if i cut things out i will get back into the bad cycle.

Thanks

Yours, Hope

QUESTION: i am a healthy weight and it has increased in the last two weeks by 2.2kgs and has not done this before. my percent has also gone up from 19% to 21.2%

does this help at all?

Answer
Dear Hope,

It seems that you are at a very healthy weight!  My suggestion to you would be a pretty easy solution:

If you can do see a nutritionist or a dietitian, they can help you develop a meal plan that is suitable for your height and a healthy weight you'd like to maintain.  She'd also help you coordinate this with your exercise levels.  This would help you quickly before your weight gets out of hand.

The body is like a little stove -- and the energy works that way too -- what you put in is burned up -- if it isn't it will become stored as excess weight.

Let me know how you do!!

Warmly,
Jeannie

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
