Question
Hi.

I was recently diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

I've always known I tend to over eat, and when I was being diagnosed as BPD they asked about the criteria of binge eating and I realised that's sort of what I do.

I don't eat all of it in one sitting, but in half a day I sometimes eat double, or more, what any reasonable person would eat (at which point I feel guilty and my stomach hurts). After a day like this I tend to try and starve myself for between 1 and 5 days (Only having a cup of tea once or twice a day).

This situation happens approximately twice a month and has been going on for years. I try to diet to get my weight under control (Female, 22, 179cm, 90kg) and after about 2 weeks I fail miserably and binge.

I've attempted purging and have gone as far as trying to track down some ipecac (much to my dismay at the time, I couldn't get ahold of it) and whenever I try to trigger the gag reflex I fail.

This evening I had an argument with my mum in which binge eating came up and afterward she asked me if I purge and that got me thinking that I may have a comorbid ED as well.

So I guess I'm asking if you can help me. Do those things above constitute binging and fasting? Do you think I might have an ED and should see my GP? If you do think there is something there like an ED, what would you say it is? Am I just an idiot reading to much into things?

Thanks. :)

Answer
You're showing signs of having one, but I can't diagnose the problem you have to have this formally diagnosed by a doctor. I will say this that people diagnosed with psych disorders from depression to what your present condition is will have some traits of eating disorders thrown into it. I would talk to a specialist to get help for that so it doesnt turn into a full-blown eating disorder because once you start it's very hard to stop and may eventually put you in the hospital and giving your mental health history that can complicate things and even more may put you in faster.
