Question

Hi,

I am 16 and have always had a bad body image and always struggled with eating.
I have a couple questions; If i have a average of 500 or less calories a day is
that bad? I never eat breakfast or lunch and I have notice lately i never want
food. I do purge after i eat something bad or alot and Is that a starting of a
eating disorder or do i just bad eating skills. and what are the signs that i
have an eating disorder because i know i have bad eating but i never admit it i
just tell people i don't feel good or i am not hungry.

Dear Jessica,

I think that you actually do have an eating disorder -- anorexia and bulimia -- I don't know you're height and weight, but did you know that the people that were in the concentration camps in Germany during World War II were only given 800 calories a day?  Less than 500 is starvation.  Between a minimal intake of food, and purging, you will get really ill eventually.  I work with so many people who are struggling to get well, who want to get well, but find it so difficult.  It would be wonderful if you could see a therapist who specializes in eating disorders and maybe a dietitian who could help you get well -- before you get very ill and end up in hospital!

Please let me know how you do!

Warmly,

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
