Anorexia/Eating Disorders/eating disorder and salty taste no matter what I eat or drink

Question
I have noticed over the past 4 months or so that anytime I eat or drink anything everything tastes very salty. I struggle from cronic Anorexia and was searching on reasons for this when I came across liver failure. I have had to have my gaul bladder removed and had alot of issues with my kidneys over the past 4 years. Kidney stones, kidney infections. I am not doing good with my eating disorder and have been struggling with my anorexia for almost 20 years. I have alot of kidney problems too. Could this salty and metallic taste when I eat be a result of liver failure??

Answer

Jeannie Rust, PhD
Dear Amy,

I am so so glad that you wrote me!

The salty taste can be a sign of liver failure or some kind of impairment in your adrenals.

No matter what it is, go to the doctor ASAP.  Do not wait!

You do not have to die as a result of your anorexia.  I hope that you are drinking plenty of water.

If you are interested in treatment, give me a call and I can help you find the place that can best meet your needs.  Please do not wait.

I can't begin to tell you what it's like very time I hear of someone dying from an eating disorder.  It's so unnecessary!  Because you can be well and not be fat, not be healthy.  You can be thin and be very healthy.

Let me know what I can do to help you!

Warmly,

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
