Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Exercise...

Question
Hi there!
right now im currently recovering from a three-month period of anorexia on my own, and i eat quite normally now...about 2000 calories a day i guess, and somedays i eat more.. however my BMI is sitll around 17.5 to 17.8 (fluctuates alot).

at this point would jogging or other forms of cardio be dangerous for me (because i heard about its effects on the heart)? should i just stop cardio cold turkey until i get to 18.5 BMI, or should i still do some exercise to stay healthy? because exercise for me isn't about weight loss, but more about feeling healthier, more confident and less stressed out. i also dont have my period back yet, so i was wondering if exercise would be detrimental to my body at around 17.8 bmi. thanks!

Answer
Andreah-  I would like to say that a bit of exercise would be ok, but you really need to talk with your doctor.  It is true that most people who die from anorexia or have serious complications are because of heart related problems so it's a legitimate concern.  Your BMI seems like it's getting better, and it's not at starvation level anymore, but talking with a doc is still the smart way to know.  As for your period, it is something of an indicator of how your body is coming along achieving a healthy weight, but it's certainly not exact.  While many runners and other competitive athletes will sometimes lose their period during certain points in their sport season, it is not healthy to go month after month without it.  Also, some women will lose their period after just a small weight loss, even if they are at a pretty reasonable weight, or if they've experienced a bit of stress from work or school.  So, your period is not an indicator of whether or not your are safe to exercise.  Again, you really need to follow the advice of your physician.
