Question
I have a tendency to overeat (eat compulsively). This has resulted in a strange body figure. I have broad shoulders, skinny arms and short legs. I am 18 so the only parts of my body that will continue to grow are my hips and skull (until the age of 25). Over time how will this affect my athletic ability? For example - running without tumbling because of excess weight on my chest.

Answer
Any extra weight that is not used in your sport will be a liability (think 350 lb football player vs a 140 lb distance runner).  Also, it is harder on your joints to carry excessive weight.  I am more concerned about the compulsive eating and you reasons for doing that.  Typically, there are things in ones life that may be unpleasant and the compulsive eating helps one feel different than how they usually feel...it is done to escape feelings and the eating offers a very brief good feeling.  What is going on that you are trying to change the feelings associated with it?  What is the food doing for you?  How can you make real changes in your life?

Expertise

I can answer questions specifically geared towards athletes and their eating issues. I would be able to assist parents or coaches with questions or concerns about disordered eating practices often found in the exercise and sports settings. I also have experience in training and conditioning so I am in a position to discus how the two interrelate.
