Question
Hello. I've messaged here before quite a while back. I had a severe case of bulimia for most of my teens and I have now been recovered for two and a half years, I don't know if you remember but I was complainiung of swollen glands. I still get this. Went to my doctor numerous times, has blood tests, ENT looked down my nose, had ultrasounds to check for stones, nothing... So I just stuck with it and hopes that it would get better. I have good days and bad days where it will just be fine for a few days and then they will be back with avengange. Its really beginning to get me down now. I have no idea what could be causing this. All of my other bulimia symptoms have disappeared, got my gag reflex back years ago, no more acid reflux. I've even paid £4,000 to get my teeth whitened and the 6 front teeth crowned.

Just wondered if you have ever come across a case where this is permanant or if the swelling can continue for this long??

Answer
Dear David,

I remember you quite well!  Congratulations for recovering.  It's not easy to do and you have done it!!

Your glands continue to puzzle me -- I would think that they would have started to recede by now.  I did find a wonderful article about parotid gland enlargement.  It includes enough of the physiological etiology of this problem that you should be able to do a more exhaustive study.  I think that it's probably some remnants of a chemical or something that has been left in the glands from your bulimic days.

Here is the link:   In 2004, Diagnosing Bulimia Nervosa with Parotid Gland Swelling.  Louis Mandel, DDS & Siak Abai.  Am Dent Assoc, Vol 135, No 5, 613-616.

Let me know what you think!

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
