Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Puking / track?

Question
Hi,
I'm not sure if you would be the right expert to ask about this, so let me know if you wouldn't be.
For the past few weeks I've been throwing up every morning. I started track in March, and now I wake up and throw up whatever I ate for breakfast. This will also happen sometimes during track practice. I never feel sick, I just can't hold my food. Would this be related to having started running?
Thanks.

Answer
I've known some pretty high level athletes who had a condition where they couldn't keep food down and would vomit frequently, even when they weren't exerting.  If there is no medical problem such as a problem with the muscular valve that holds the food in the stomach or other medical problem, I'd look at anxiety and other stress/pressure induced causes.  I counselor could help and especially someone with experience in sport psychology.  It could be due to the physiological stress of your running program, but it's more likely there is something medical or possibly stress related.
