Question
Hi, I'm 37, married with 3 young children.  I always had weight issues, but did well on diets, until this last 2 years.  After the last baby my mental health issues intensified, I have bipolar ll, anxiety, ADD, and a child with ADHD.  I'm an emotional eater, I have an addictive personality ( eating, shopping, Internet) and I find it extremely hard to stop when I start eating.  I'm 5' 1" and 160lbs!  I hate how I look and the worse I feel about myself the more I eat.  My doctor suggested Topamax, what is your opinion?  Thank you

Dear Gabi,

By all means give topamax a try.  Are you on any other medications?  If not you should be.  I would suggest getting an appointment with a good psychiatrist.  I know that in Canada you'll have to wait a bit but with all of the psych issues you have, a good psych eval could help you tremendously.  It's so stressful having 3 young children, so I'm not surprised at all that you've turned to food for some comfort.

I'm not so sure that eating is an addiction like alcohol and drugs, but I do know that it makes us feel better pretty quickly!  It's all about self-soothing.  If it's not with food, we'll use shopping, internet -- just like you said.

I don't know if you can afford to see a counselor but if you can, someone who specialize in eating disorders would be fabulous.  If you can't, you can to to Overeaters Anonymous meetings -- at least 3 a week.  You'll find relief there because everyone else is suffering from the same thing.  You can also call around and see if any therapists are having any women's groups.

Please let me know how you do!!  You can feel better -- it's just going to take a little doing, but I'll help however I can.

Warmly,

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
