Question
Hi my name is Jessica and i am 18 years old and i am about 5'2. I recently weighed my self twice. the first time i did i was 175 and i felt extremely bad about my self so i stopped eating for three days of one week and eat little this through out the rest of the four days. the second time i weighed my self i was 168. I guess my question is if i keep fasting for three days out of the week and keep my cal intake less then 500 a day will that help me lose more weight. i know people say fasting is a bad idea and unhealthy but if its so bad then why do a lot of people do it then. i would really appreciate the help i am a little lost with all of this.
   thanks Jessica

Dear Jessica,

I am so glad that you wrote!  Fasting can be quite harmful to your body.  One of the best ways I've found to lose weight is to go to weight watchers.  The hardest part is when you've gotten to your goal weight -- and then what?  You don't know how to eat to maintain that weight loss and there goes the yoyo effect.

People fast and do lots of unhealthy things (such as take drugs) because they have low self-esteem and don't care enough about themselves to do things properly.

There are a lot of good diets out there -- merely cutting out fat and anything that is white in color will help you lose weight!  :o)

Please let me know how you do!

Warmly,

Expertise

I have been treating eating disorders for over 25 years and I have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an expert in anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders and in co-occurring disorders as well -- depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. I was the official eating disorder therapist for the University of Arizona athletic department and love working with girls and women of all ages! 12 years ago I started my own treatment centers in Arizona where we treat adolescents and adults. I love working with people and have been helping people online since 1994. My hearts go out to the people out there who are unable to find help, who aren't sure whether they need help, and who don't have much of an understanding of the terrible consequences, emotionally and physically, that go hand in hand with the eating disorder. I view eating disorders as coping mechanisms that people use when they are under stress. I believe that eating disorders most times have many similarities whether it is anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. The good news is that people can heal from an eating disorder and learn to create the lives they would like to live.

Experience

I have 25 years of experience in treating eating disorders of all kinds. I also do consultations for people who are starting treatment centers.
