Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Bulimia and metabolism

Question
Hi There

My question is fairly simple. I have been bulimic for approx 12 years. I am not as bad as I used to be (3/4 times a day) more like once or twice now (twice on bad days)
I want to go back to normal eating but am terrified of putting on weight eating normally and digesting food. How much weight can I expect to gain going back to normal and how soon will my metabolism be back to burning what it should?? How can I tell if my digestive system is working properly again??

I just need an estimation of times so I know it won't be too bad.
Please help me understand what I should do.

Thanks

Answer
Unfortunately, I can't even estimate a time here.  It is different for everyone, and isn't helped by the fact that your body has had to deal with this for 12 years!

Have you got professional help?  If not, I would recommend getting some, as these habits are hard to break on your own!  I would also recommend getting a physical done by your Dr to check that there will be no lasting damage from this!

I'm sorry this e-mail couldn't give you the answer you wanted!

Please feel free to come back if you have anything else you would like to ask!

All the best
Holly

Expertise

I am a medical student and have suffered from anorexia and bulimia myself, I am willing to answer questions based on my own experiences. My advice, however, should not be used as a substitute for that of a qualified medical professional.

Experience

I suffered from anorexia from the age of about 10. By the age of 13 I was suffering from bulimia. Now after 10 years of suffering from an eating disorder, I feel that I can say that I'm well on my way with recovery and would just like to be able to share what I have learned with those in similar situations!
