Question -
Hi. i was wondering if i can lose weight by having cabage soup? i think my metabolism is slow and i am anorexic but does that still mean that i can lose weight on it? i also exercise and was planning to do it for 2 weeks and just have the soup and a few sultanas and exercise heaps! do you reckon that i could lose weight and how much?

Answer -
Hi Jenna,

My sincere apologies for being slow with this response and I hope this finds you doing well.

Since you are anorexic, it probably won't help you much to only eat cabbage soup and exercise a lot since your metabolism is already slow.  For someone who eats regularly, this may cause some weight loss but even in that case, it would probably slow down the person's metabolism significantly in a short period of time.

I really hope that you will choose another way to eat and consider getting help for your anorexia.  I have been there myself and while I truly do understand the feeling that you "have" to lose more weight and will do anything to achieve that goal, I can also tell you that it does catch up with you and can cause permanent damage to your body or even death.  While I expect that this might seem like I am being drastic, I honestly promise you that life is so much better and happier when you can get rid of this in your life.

Please take care, okay?  And I hope that this answer helps at least a bit.  Feel free to write again if I can help with anything else.

Best,
Meg

Hello Jenna,

I know that it probably feels incredibly frusterating that you're not losing weight and that you *feel* fat, despite your not eating and overexercising.

It does sound like your metabolism is not working properly and although its counterintuitive to what your feel like you should be doing, the best course of action is to eat more and let your body get healthier again.  Then, if you really do need to lose weight, your body will be in a position to do so(and keep in mind that although its totally possible to FEEL really fat, you most likely are experiencing extremely distorted body image which is very common in anoreixa).

Also, I hope that at least a little part of you can take a step back and look at how desperate your ED is making you and how the feeling that you have to lose more is dominating your life and thoughts.  Trust me, I understand how very real that can feel as I've been there but if you can step outside of yourself for a moment and put a friend or younger sister/cousin in your shoes, I think you would tell her that this is taking over her life and that its just not worth it.

Take care and let me know if there is anything else that I can help with.

Hi Jenna,

No, a water fast will not help and will only make you sick and possibly land you in the hospital.  I really suggest that you think about getting some kind of help as it sounds like you are pretty deep in your eating disorder right now and you deserve more from life than this can give you.

Please take care,
Meg

Hello again, Jen,

I really do not know and I'm sorry that I don't have a more concrete answer for this.  It really depends on how damaged your body and metabolism already are.  As I said before, the one thing that I can promise with a 14 day fast is that you are going to end up sick and probably under medical care.  While this might not be a bad thing for you at this point, I'm guessing it is not something that you particularly want.

I hope that you can see how desperate this eating disorder is making you and understand that it has taken over your life and you REALLY need to find a way to work on it ASAP.

Take care,
Meg

Jenna,

I really do not know.  Sorry.  As I said, you may lose weight, you may not but I do know that it will further mess up your metabolism and make you sick.

Please take care and think about getting help.

Best,
Meg

Answer
Jenna,

I truly do not know.  It depends on how much you weigh, how messed up your body is now (which I have no way of knowing), how long you've been sick and many other various figures that I can't know.

Again, I do not recommend such a diet and feel that it will end up with you getting incredibly sick and probably requireing immediate medical attention.

Please think about getting some sort of help, or if you are not open to that, please try to take an objective look at how powerful your eating disorder is at this time in your life.  You are worth more than this.

Best,
Meg

Expertise

I am recovering from about nine years with my eating disorder and while I am not a psychologist, I`ve accumulated a good deal of knowledge about eating disorders as well as my own experience over this time. I`ve mainly struggled with anorexia, but have definitely had times where I have engaged in bulimic behaviors as well. I also struggle with over exercising, but am about to be certified as a personal trainer and have learned moderation as well as how to treat my body well so it can perform at it`s best. I promise to give an honest answer to anything asked, and I want to say that while it is a long, scary road---it is possible to get free of this and it is so important to keep on taking little steps and knowing that you are not alone.

Experience

Sufferer for nine plus years. Also, my Mom has struggled with this issue- as have others in her side of the family.

Education/Credentials
My degree is not in psychology, I have simply lived with and overcome an eating disorder.
