Question
I've struggled since my early 20's with an obsession about dieting and my body image.  I've been to OA, been hypnotized, took laxatives, etc.  I've never purged, but that's about all I haven't tried.  Some times I can get a grip on it, and my weight is more manageable, but if I go through a particularly bad experience with men in particular - I just start binging on sweets.  Right now, I'm taking Didrex, and that's really not helping that much.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!!!

Answer
Hello Diana

Yes, I think most women would agree that at the root of nearly every problem is a man. I'm not trying to trivialize this but I think you already know that women in particular have coping mechanisms when it comes to experiences like relationships and you're not alone with yours.

However, I understand this cuts a bit deeper than that. Your problem will not be solved by pills. I know you've said it failed but I really do believe this can be fixed with the right therapy. Your problem sits in the habitual sense of the word and you need the help of an occupational therapist to nip this in the bud.

I hope this helps,
Loren

Expertise

I can answer most questions in relation to anorexia, bulimia, ED-NOS, obsessive compulsive tendencies and body dysphormic issues.

Experience

I am not certified in psychology or any other related topic of under/post-graduate study. However, I have lived with a combination of eating disorders, body dysphormia, OCD and depression since the age of thirteen so I can offer understanding and advice to anyone who needs it. I am pretty knowledgeable in both the physical and emotional side effects of eating disorders having experienced them myself. I, too, have dealt with self-recovery so I can offer support/encouragement to anyone currently going through the same.
