Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Health problems with bulimia
Expert: Joanne - 12/15/2004
QuestionHello. I was wondering about health problems associated with years of bulimia struggle. Are there serious health problems? I've struggled with this for many years and am over it. But I just wondered of any health issues I could have or what this disease could have done to me... Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon...
AnswerGood for you for 'getting over it'!
Erosion of tooth enamel because of repeated exposure to acidic gastric contents.
Dental cavities, sensitivity to hot or cold food.
Swelling and soreness in the salivary glands (from repeated vomiting).
Stomach Ulcers.
Ruptures of the stomach and esophagus.
Abnormal buildup of fluid in the intestines.
Disruption in the normal bowel release function.
Electrolyte imbalance.
Dehydration
Irregular heartbeat and in severe cases heart attack
A greater risk for suicidal behavior
Decrease in libido
These are just some effects that Bulimia has on the body. Many of them can be corrected eating a balanced diet, but things such as stomach ulcers and dental problems are more persistent. In fact dental problems are normally irreversible. The risk of heart attacks and similar problems are greatly reduced once you stop purging, so please don't be too frightened by this.
