Question
Dear Meg:

Hi. I have suffered from anorexia for approximately five years, and have gone through mild recovery. I have gained quite a bit of the lossed weight back, however, I am still low on the BMI. In accordance with my anorexia, I have also suffered through five years of mild edema in my lower extremeties (knees down to ankles) and have a swollen gland (I believe it's my lymph node) on the left side of my neck. These are two issues that have yet to resolve. I am worried and beginning to wonder if they ever will. Do you know what could be the cause of this? Is it eating-disorder related? Is it reversible? I am going to see a doctor next week, but I would appreciate any feedback to alleviate my fears. Thanks much. Sunny

Answer
Hi Sunny-

First off, good for you for working on recovery and going to the doctor.   Two very good steps, indeed!  Its wonderful that you have gained some of your weight back and hopefully you can continue to take steps towards getting fully healthy again.

As for being at the low end of the BMI, it is possible that this is still affecting your health and you may need to continue to getting back to a good place for your body in order to get rid of your lingering symptoms.  This is something that I would discuss with your doctor at your appointment.

That said, it is possible that your edema is still from your body not getting enough nutrients and still being a bit out of whack.  Its good that you're checking on this with your doctor and I can tell you from my experience that although it took awhile, as long as you keep moving in the right direction and keep giving your body adequate nutrition (and if need be get back to a healthy weight for your body type), your symptoms should go away.

As for the lymph node, I'm not really sure about that but I'm guessing it could possibly be from lowered immunity, which is common with anorexia.

I'm sorry that I don't have more clinical medical information for you about these symptoms, but I'm sure your doctor can answer these questions and more.

And, honestly I really hope that you will continue to work on recovery.  It does take awhile and it is kind of scary sometimes to let go of the anorexia and all that goes with it-but it really is possible and worth it to get better.

I hope this helped at least a little and wish you lots of luck with your appointment and with your journey back to health.  Feel free to write if there is anything else I can do or if anything I've written was unclear.

Take care!
Meg

Expertise

I am recovering from about nine years with my eating disorder and while I am not a psychologist, I`ve accumulated a good deal of knowledge about eating disorders as well as my own experience over this time. I`ve mainly struggled with anorexia, but have definitely had times where I have engaged in bulimic behaviors as well. I also struggle with over exercising, but am about to be certified as a personal trainer and have learned moderation as well as how to treat my body well so it can perform at it`s best. I promise to give an honest answer to anything asked, and I want to say that while it is a long, scary road---it is possible to get free of this and it is so important to keep on taking little steps and knowing that you are not alone.

Experience

Sufferer for nine plus years. Also, my Mom has struggled with this issue- as have others in her side of the family.

Education/Credentials
My degree is not in psychology, I have simply lived with and overcome an eating disorder.
