Anorexia/Eating Disorders/body image pressure

Question
Do you think that the media intentionally puts pressure on adolescents to change their image? Why?

Does the television you watch, magazines you read or the radio you listen to, promote nutritional and self image advice; either good or bad?

Answer
Hi Emma, I believe that the fashion industry is trying to do a part in stopping the promotion of the ultra-skinny model. But it is not enough. As long as Hollywood, and the media continue to portray women as weak, unblemished people, there will be problems. This is why I feel that our self-image must come from within. When I decided that how I looked, felt about myself and how I was portrayed was in my hands, my personal life became happier.  If you do not let anyone influence the way you feel about yourself, you will become more and more confident. Women must stand tall and not allow anyone to decide we should look or feel a certain way. We are all individuals and our pride must come from within. If you are young, there may be bumps along the road, but at least you are learning early how to deal with them. Control you environment as much as you can. Do not allow anyone to bring contents into your home that degrades women or portrays them as sexual objects. We only allow media in our home that builds self-confidence for everyone, the rest get blocked out or throw in the trash outside.  You alone are in control of your future, so stand tall and do not let anyone steal your pride. It is the good person that is within you that matters, not the wrapper.  Help build up your friends and family as well. This will help you in your own journey. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Regards, Susan
