Anorexia/Eating Disorders/bulimia and damage done

Question
About a year ago was the first time that I binged and purged by making myself throw up.  For the past year, this is not something that I've done frequently all the time.  In Jan. (when I first started) I did it once a day for about a week.  Then over the summer, I did it once or twice a day for about two weeks.  Most recently, for the past couple of months, it is something that I've been doing on the weekends only, usually only one time during the weekend.  However, on Thanksgiving, I binged and purged 4 times, and today, I binged and purged 4 times.  I seriously hope to stop this behavior, and plan to call my doctor first thing Monday morning to ask for a referral for counseling.  My question is, have I already done damage to my body and my metabolism with my behavior, or will I be okay if I truly do stop this behavior starting right now? Thanks.

Answer
You'll be a lot more ok if you stop than if you don't.

Human stomach acid is the most powerful acid known on earth. How about that? We are so specialized that the lining of our stomach is one of the most ideal "containers" for that acid.  Our throats/esophagus doesn't have that lining, that's why we feel a burn when we get sick.

Some people have "acid reflux disease", little surges of spasms where the acid comes up into the lower esophagus and is frequently called "heart burn" (it has nothing to do with the heart). Regular episodes of this disorder can wear the esophagus thin, making conditions very, very right for cancer. And it doesn't take as long as people might think.

Bulimics who use purging in this manner wear their esophagus down on a much more significant level and they often don't progress to the cancer stage because they die sooner. A majority of bulimics are found dead with their heads in a toilet (what a legacy and memory to leave huh?). Others die agonizing deaths when their esophagus spontaneously ruptures and they drown, slowly, choking in their own acid, blood and fluids. Terrifying isn't it?

Others end up dying from heart failure while driving in their car, getting dressed, walking up stairs, whatever.

The recent, highly profiled case of the woman in a coma for nearly 20 years and taken off life support? She was a bulimic and it's widely held that THIS is what led to her initial heart disorder and coma.

Can the damage you've done repair itself? YES!!!!

Expertise

I have lived it and survived it. I know every excuse, reason, thought, feeling and rationalization - and I'm going to be very honest in my advice.

Experience

I've lost (& gained)HUNDREDS of lbs over a lifetime, more than 30 years of "professional dieting". Presently a counselor for sufferers of eating disorders, a nutritional advisor and spiritual counselor (Reverend, doctor); I've been on every diet there is and used the most bizarre weight loss products you can imagine. I am FORMERLY obese, anorexic (several times), bulimic MOST of the time - and maintaining size 4, with no gimmicks, devices, programs, pills or supplements.

I currently investigate the diet industry on behalf of consumers who do not need to be ripped off while struggling to be healthy. I WILL expose them all and I WON'T be intimidated, bullied or bought. My advice is for cost-free options. I have nothing whatsoever to gain from my recommendation(s). I make no money from my website and I sell, promote, endorse NO diet/health products, programs or devices. You'll also never see me on the receiving end of a hidden camera report...but you can be assured, I won't quit until I've exposed those who are out to take advantage of you.

It's a matter of choices. We need to stop complicating things.
