Anorexia/Eating Disorders/stomach cramps

Question
Holly,

I think I am anorexic or at least quite underweight.  In recent months, I have lost a bit more weight, have not b/p, but have been experiencing severe stomach cramping, especially at night.  The cramps are so bad that they wake me from sleep.  Is this something serious?  What is going on?

Thank you for any and all help you can provide me with.

Answer
Do you eat enough during the day, or are you essentially starving yourself?

If it is the latter, I think the cramps at night are due to your stomach having nothing to work on (food!).  Even if you are eating a little during the day, come night time, your body will still be looking for food to help digest.

Whether or not you are eating, I reckon that you should go and make an appointment with your Dr.  This is most likely nothing serious, but I am not able to say that for sure, and would hate to be wrong and you end up ill.

I think you should go and see him/her and tell them that you think that you are anorexic and make sure that they test your blood and check you over!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to come back.

All the best
Holly

Expertise

I am a medical student and have suffered from anorexia and bulimia myself, I am willing to answer questions based on my own experiences. My advice, however, should not be used as a substitute for that of a qualified medical professional.

Experience

I suffered from anorexia from the age of about 10. By the age of 13 I was suffering from bulimia. Now after 10 years of suffering from an eating disorder, I feel that I can say that I'm well on my way with recovery and would just like to be able to share what I have learned with those in similar situations!
