About Meg
Expertise
I am recovinging from about nine years with my eating disorder and while I am not a psychologist, I`ve accumulated a good deal of knowlege about eating disorders as well as my own experience over this time. I`ve mainly struggled with anorexia, but have definitely had times where I have engaged in bulimic behaviors as well. I also struggle with over exercising, but am about to be certified as a personal trainer and have learned moderation as well as how to treat my body well so it can perform at it`s best. I promise to give an honest answer to anything asked, and I want to say that while it is a long, scary road---it is possible to get free of this and it is so important to keep on taking little steps and knowing that you are not alone.

Experience
Sufferer for nine plus years. Also, my Mom has strugged with this issue- as have others in her side of the family.

Question
hi my name is katie and i feel fatter than all my friends.. i weigh 120 pounds and my love handles are sticking out and i have a chubby stomach now!! its getting bigger everytime i wake up and im thinking about not eatting anymore because exerciseing isnt helping any..

Answer
Hi Katie,

Thanks for your question and I'm sorry that you're feeling like you are fatter than your friends.  I know that this can be daunting, especially when you feel like everyone is thin and you are not.  However, I can promise you that at 120 pounds, you are no where close to being fat.  And, its likely that a lot of other girls at your school and among your friends also feel like they are the "fat" ones.  I'm guessing you are probably in your teens and perhaps at the point in your life when you are growing and beginning to get curves.  This can be a difficult time for everyone as its true that most girls do begin to develop a more shapely body than they have previously had and that can *feel* like fat.  However, it is not and its a normal part of growing up and most people go through a phase of feeling out of sorts in their body.

In terms of exercise not working, I would suggest perhaps trying some moves specifically targeted for your abs.  Here are some ideas from Self Magazine:

Although not eating may seem like the thing to do, it is not and causes many more problems than its worth.  And, you are already at a healthy/thin weight (even if you can't see that) so while having sculpting a body part as a goal is probably okay, thinking that you need to lose weight is incorrect and will lead to problems.

I'm sure that you are a bright young woman with goals and dreams and I can promise you that getting caught up in an eating disorder will only put those things on the back burner and lead you towards sickness and missing out on a lot of things that are an important part of growing up.  Its not worth it, and you ARE worth it (in terms of staying healthy).

Hope this helped and please feel free to write again if there is anything else that I can help with.

Take care,
Meg
