Question
pelvic bone?
pelvic bone?
Hi John,

today,we found a bone on the beach and it looks like an old human pelvic sacrum bone to us.It measures 10cm across. What do you think and could you tell us more about it please. We are very interested in it.
Thank you very much.
kind regards
Andrea

Answer
Hi Andrea
It's a pelvic bone (sacrum), but not human. Too short.
I don't really have the expertise to tell you exactly what species it is.
Take it to a natural history museum near where you found it.  They may be able to assist you.
FYI:  Whenever you find large bones on a beach like this, it is best to contact the police or a park ranger before you move it.  If human, it could be part of a crime scene.  Beaches, being isolated places and places where wind and water combine to decompose bodies quickly, are favored locations for criminals to dispose of bodies.
