Question
hello, i was wondering if you could tell me about the career opportunities and job facilities in anthropology. I am an first year honors student of anthropology in Bangladesh!

Answer
Hello Sreya,

Welcome to AllExperts dear 'young Anthropologist'.

As a Bangladeshi Anthropologist, I find your question a critical one. It really depends on the perspective and the goal you choose. Virtually, Anthropologists can contribute in most of the areas, and in Bangladesh a number of my fellow Anthropologists are working. These include:

1. Contribute to the academia and nurturing students of Anthropology through working as a teacher in public or private universities,
2. Work as a researcher in "pure" or "applied" research projects, a number of organizations precisely look for Anthropological expertise (research areas include, but not limited to: chronic diseases, waterborne diseases, child health, aging, maternal health, reproductive health, HIV & AIDS, gender & sexuality etc.)
3. Work in program implementation, where an Anthropologist can contribute significantly with his/her innovative ideas. Also, s/he can contribute in monitoring and evaluation of program activities
4. Work in market research and so many areas!

Entering a job demand experience. The question is where will you get that, right? Work with your teachers (if there is an opportunity), try to have internship in NGOs (a number of NGOs and INGOs offers such opportunity), seek for grant from donors for your honors/masters research (this really counts) and choose a topic that is trendy, try for a part time work in NGOs (definitely once you have some grip over basic concepts of Anthropology and research methods) etc..

However, to succeed in a career, a few qualities are required, and each Anthropologists should have these: sense of precession, capacity to contextualize, knowledge about a particular field s/he is going to work, presentation skills and, of course, the performance at job. And, finally updating oneself through reading, reading and reading as much as possible.

Best of luck my dear friend.

Thanks and regards,
Gorkey
