Question
Hi! I must write an essay on how machismo in 1980's Nicaragua (we read the book "Life is Hard" by Lancaster) is a 'system of productive relations'. Except, I am unsure what that system actually is or what it entails. Thus I am having great difficulty writing it. Please, any information at all, as soon as possible, is helpful.

Thanks a bunch!

Answer
Krystle,  I am sorry but I am not familiar with this book.  So I am unable to help you from this stand point.  However the concept of "machismo" is one of hierarchical relationships. This is generally found within male dominated societies such as those of Latin America.  In these socities, it is who you know and your status in this hierachy that allows you  to move around in that society.  To move upwards requires a change in your status or postion in society.  Thus marrying upwards is a good thing, getting into college and a degree is a good thing.  These change your status and allow upward mobility.  Thus increasing your machismo.
