Question
Dear Mr. Salier,
I was wondering if you knew anything about ancient egypt, and if you did, what kind of jewels the ancient egyptians liked to use.
          Thank you,
                  a student

Answer
Syd,

The ancient Egyptians (royalty) were the only ones permitted to "own" jewels. They liked Gold of course and their craftsmen shaped Lapiz Lazul, Turquoise, Amber, and other semi precious stones.  They did not have rubys, emerald, saphire or diamonds.  Near the end of the rule of the Pharos glass was imported and was viewed as a precious jewel.  Also at this time some gems did find their way to Egypt from ancient India
