Subject: 1979 Linden German Matel Clock

Question
I just got the 1979 Linden German Mantel clock.  I was told that it works and that I would have to level it and wind the middle section. I have made sure that is level and did wind it until I could not turn the key anymore (I didn’t force it, just stopped once I felt tension). I still can’t get it to work.  The pendulum won’t swing.  Is there anything I can do?

Answer
Hi Lauren,

First, you must wind all keyholes (whether it has 2 or 3) all the way. If the pendulum will not continue swinging after you start it, the clock is most likely out of beat. Please browse my previous answers for discussions of setting the beat.

It is also possible that the bearings in the movement are worn, and the clock needs an overhaul or a new movement. 1979 is old for a modern mantle clock of this type their average lifespan is about 15 years, although this can vary greatly.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
