Antique Clocks - Plymouth Mantel Clock

Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 11/20/2008

Question
I have a Plymouth Mantel Clock; I'm not sure what year it was produced.  I have photos if you would like to see it.  I have several Plymouth questions.

First, was there a Plymouth clock company, or was this brand name made by Seth Thomas or some other clock company in the Thomaston, CT area?

Second, there are two arbor holes (4 o'clock and 8 o'clock).  Are they both used for the same purpose?  I can wind the 8 o'clock arbor, but the 4 o'clock arbor seems to be wound tight.  What should I do?

Third, the clock runs and keeps good time.  It chimes once on the half-hour and 1-12 times on the hour (to match the hour).  Even though it is keeping time, it doesn't sound right to me.  I think it is supposed to sound like tick-tock, tick-tock in a steady rhythm, but this one sounds like a rapid tick-tock at each end of the pendulum swing.  I hope that makes sense to you.

Finally, is there a resource website where I can get movement schematics and operational instructions?

Thanks!

Answer
this brand name was made by Seth Thomas in Thomaston, CT about the 1950's- not much is written about it.

left winds the strike the right the time--they may turn opposite directions

if it runs and keeps time - ignore the sounds.

only generic instructions are around for modern clocks - like from Howard Miller Clock Co  online    http://www.howardmiller.com
