Antique Clocks - Elliott chiming mantel clock automatic night shut off

Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 8/12/2008

Question
I have an Elliott mantel clock circa 1950 with Westminster chimes. It has the silence facility using the lever at the 3 o'clock position but also has an automatic night shut off.Unfortunately this shuts off at 9 pm and starts chiming again at 5 am.Am sure this should be 11pm to 7am or thereabouts..can this be changed and if so how.I would greatly appreciate your comments..regards,Maurice

Answer
in the 1950's people went to bed at 9pm.

It can be changed but it requires the gear mesh points between two gears on the front of the mechanism to be altered- I suggest a Pro is needed to remove the mechanism and make the change without contingent damage being done.
