Antique Musical Instruments/Is this a french horn?

Question
I ran accross a horn that looks like a french horn, but has trumpet style valves which I have never seen before.  The bell has "Cavalier Elkhart, Ind.U.S.A. stamped on it."
and is silver plated.  Any idea what key it is in?
I can email you a picture if you need.

Thanks

Answer
It almost certainly is a mellophone.  Mellophones were generally pitched in F&Eb (as was this Cavalier) with either a long tuning or additional slides to swap out to change pitch.  Some even had the ability to tune down to D and C.  Cavalier was a student line made by Conn.

There certainly are Bb French horns around, I have a couple here.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
