Question
I have a Euphonium marked:

U.S.
JTL
Jerome
Thibouville-Lamy
Paris
New York
106494

I'd love to know roughly when it was made and any pointers
to more information would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for your time and expertise,
   - Tim.

Answer
The Thibouville family businesses started in Paris in 1860's producing all wind and string instruments.  The Thibouville family included Martin, Eugene Adrien Camille, Jerome, Andre, and Louis.  And associations including:  "freres", "frere", "frere aine", pere, pere& fils, Beranger, Buffett, Cabart, Coudervillain, Creutzer, Grandin, Herouard, Lamy, Noblet, Noe, Noe & files.

Jerome started his business in 1867, and opened a store in New York in
1895.  So,  it no older than that, but there are no known serial number lists for the company.  To more closely determine age will probably require basing that determination on general characteristics of the instrument.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
