Antique Musical Instruments/Keefer trombone

Question
I am thinking of buying an old tenor trombone.   It is silver and has the words Made by Keefer  Williamsport PA on the bell with some scroll work.   There isn't a number anywhere.  I would like to know about this company as I have never heard of it.

Answer
The Keefer company formed in 1909 made excellent quality instruments until the early 1940s.  After that there were some instruments with the Keefer name but they were stencils of lessor quality.  Brua Keefer bought out the Distin company and built the Keefer reputation on the workmanship and designs of the Distin Company.  I have never seen a Keefer without a serial number.  At least on some of the trombones the serial was on the connector between the slide and bell sections.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
