Antique Musical Instruments/Trumpet

Question
I have my grandfather's trumpet manufactured by the Boston Musical Instrument Company in 1918-19 (based on the ID #.) I am thinking about having the trumpet refurbished and wonder if this trumpet, when refurbished, would have a quality of sound better than an inexpensive beginning band trumpet. In other words, was it made with quality in the first place and is it worth refurbishing?

Answer
In a word, yes.

I'm assuming that it is in relatively good condition, and refurbishing it is going to require seriously reconstructing.  One factor that may be a consideration is whether it plays at modern pitch.  It is likely that it may be already or can be made configurable to modern pitch.

It would have been considered a professional instrument at the time that it was made.  And Boston was a well regarded maker.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
